Quick Q & A with Melanie & Jenna
BOTH OF YOU SEEM TO HAVE A LOT OF PASSION ABOUT YOUR RESPECTIVE FIELDS. WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO GET INTO NATURAL MEDICINE?
M: I found energy work in 2009 when my brother, Chris, introduced me to Tai-Chi and Yoga. After becoming certified in Tai-Chi, I knew I wanted to explore this Universal force that I had begun to feel. So in 2011, I became a student of Oriental Medicine at the New England School of Acupuncture. While at NESA I also studied Reiki and became interested in oils and tinctures, remedies of all kinds. It's been the best decision I've ever made.
J: I went backpacking through Europe after graduating from college. While there, I became quite sick with what felt like bronchitis. A local recommended going to a pharmacy. Only this was not your typical pharmacy. The woman behind the counter recommend homeopathic remedies, of which I knew very little about. But they worked! After that, I was a believer and couldn't wait to learn more. Shortly after returning, I decided to move to Salt Lake City, Utah to attend a year long training program in massage therapy at the Utah College of Massage Therapy, and then right afterwards, an Herbaculture Program Internship at the Herb Pharm, a certified organic herb farm nestled in the Siskiyou Mountains of Southern Oregon.
WHAT DO YOU GUYS LIKE TO DO WHEN YOU ARE NOT AT URBAN BLISS?
M: I'm an animal lover, movie buff, and amateur photographer who enjoys hiking and paddling in the warmer seasons, and snowball-hurling and snow angel-making in the colder seasons. I'm a bit of a dreamer and I'm in my head a lot with work, so anything that gets me outside connecting with wildlife is what I gravitate to.
J: Well, being a mom to Ella, who is 5 years old, is my happy place. When we are together, I just light up. I enjoy contemplating things, like the bigger questions in life. Moving my body with various activities such as swimming, biking, and kayaking has always been important to keep me grounded. Reading books is a great love. I'm pretty much an information junkie. I'm constantly absorbing as much information as I can every day and sharing it with those around me, whether its science, pop culture, interesting facts, or simply philosophy talk.
